Maui Eats - Our Must Try Island Food

A guide to some of our favorite meals and treats that are a must eat while in Maui.

With a wide variety of delicious foods and drinks available to try while in Maui, your trip may not lend itself to tasting everything the island has to offer. During our week-long visit, we had the opportunity to sample a lot of different dishes and here are our recommendations on some we think you should try too.

Hula Grill - Ceviche

If you find yourself at Hula Grill and are having trouble deciding on a starter, consider the Hawaiian Ceviche. Fresh fish, lime, coconut milk, Maui onion, avocado, cucumber, and jalapeño combine together with crispy taro chips to form the perfect tropical appetizer and our favorite of the week.

Leilani's - Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna Steak

Leilani's holds the honor of having the favorite dish of our trip. Their Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna Steak is delicately seared giving it a light crispy outside while literally melting in your mouth. Perfectly complimented with Jasmine rice and shiitake-soy butter, and local vegetables, we cannot say enough good things about this dish.

Paia Fish Market - Fish Tacos

Paia Fish Market is a popular spot for quick, delicious fish tacos that can be ordered as a meal or a la carte. Topped with a little of their magic sauce these may be some of the best fish tacos in Maui, and if not were at least our favorites. If you want to mix it up, consider the shrimp tacos which are equally as delicious.

Hula Pie

A Maui favorite, Hula Pie can be found at several restaurants around the island; however, its origin comes from Kimo's, where it is said that it's "What the sailors swam ashore for in Old Lahaina Town". Made with macadamia nut ice cream resting on a cookie crust and smothered in hot fudge, macadamia nuts, and whipped cream, this famous Maui dessert is high on our list of must tries.

Leoda's Kitchen & Pie Shop - Banana Cream Pie

Looking for a shareable treat? Then Leoda's pie shop may be the place for you. Located in Olowalu, Leoda's is conveniently located on Honoapiilani Hwy. Walk in and peruse the pie display and if you can't decide, go for their popular banana cream pie. Southerner's may be pleasantly surprised to find it's a good alternative to your grandma's banana pudding, just in a different form.

Coconut Glen's - Coconut Ice Cream

If you find yourself on the Road to Hana and in need of a cool treat, makes sure to pop into Coconut Glen's. This roadside ice cream truck will surely cure your sweet tooth with their coconut milk ice cream available in a number of flavors. We opted for the day's mystery flavor which happened to be coconut ice cream with macadamia nuts and honey.

Slappy Cakes - Hawaiian Pancakes

Last but not least, we can't skip the most important meal of the day. If you are looking for a quick breakfast place to take in some much-needed calories before a day full of activities, consider stopping by Slappy Cakes in the Ka'anapali area. Here you can find all the traditional breakfast staples, but we recommend trying the Hawaiian pancakes - buttermilk pancakes topped with bananas, fresh pineapples, macadamia nuts and whipped cream that will surely hit the spot, especially drizzled with a little of their coconut syrup.

Honorable Mention: Hula Grill - Mai Tai

You can't come to Maui without getting a Mai Tai, and if you are going to get one, it might as well be from Hula Grill. The restaurant's outstanding outdoor setting, located just off the beach, is perfect for sipping this tropical cocktail while you enjoy the cool ocean breeze and the soothing sounds of live Hawaiian music.
